Academic and Research Institute of Law was established in May 2016. It is headed by Doctor of Juridical Science, Professor A.M. Kulish.

Background:

1997 – the Section of Jurisprudence at the Department of Political Science, Sociology and Law of Sumy State University was founded. The first students' admission for Specialist qualification degree was made there;

2005 – the Department of Law was established;

2006 – a license for training lawyers for getting Bachelor qualification degree was obtained;

2010 – the Faculty of Law was established;

2016 – the Academic and Research Institute of Law was established.

During the period from 2006 till present, Academic and Research Institute of Law has trained more than 1253 specialists.

The purposes of the Institute’s Foundation consist in meeting the growing demand for highly trained specialists in the field of Law that have solid theoretical knowledge and practical skills of their application, revival, preservation and promotion of Ukrainian legal affairs and traditions, the implementation of cultural and educational activities, fundamental and applied research, promotion of Ukrainian law-making and enforcement process.

The objectives of the Institute are training qualified professionals in a field of Law, familiarizing students with general and legal culture, formation of high moral qualities, patriotism, respect for law, social responsibility, teamwork in accordance with the actual situations and the norms of law, creating appropriate conditions for the harmonious development of the personality.

Academic staff of the Academic and Research Institute of Law includes Doctors of Science and Candidates of Science (Ph.D.). Most lecturers have extensive practical experience in the legal field.

Legal Clinic of Sumy State University

The Legal Clinic of SumDU operates at the Academic and Research Institute of Law, where students of the Institute provide free legal aid for the society. The work of SumDU Legal Clinic is aimed at providing practical training for the students' professional skills, their awareness of the mission of legal profession and broadening an access for the society to legal aid.

SumDU Academic and Research Institute of Law provides training for lawyers in the following majors:

Jurisprudence (Bachelor/ Master)

Financial and Economic Security Management (FESM) (Master)

Modes of study: full-time, part-time, distance learning.

The postgraduate and postdoctoral programmes are provided for the specialty 12.00.07 of the Department of Administrative, Economic Law and Financial and Economic Security.

For each degree and major there are places of state order.

The cooperation with international partners in the sphere of education is one of the priorities of international activity at SumDU Academic and Research Institute of Law. The Departments of the Institute maintain business relations with international colleagues. The academic staff and students of the Departments actively participate in international scientific conferences. Articles and research works are published in the international editions and professional journals of foreign countries. There are publications in journals that are indexed by Scopus database.

The researchers of the Institute M.M. Burbyka and V.M. Vlasenko are also the lecturers of the leading international universities.

In 2013-2014 such disciplines as Civil Law and Criminal Law were approved as the course specialties of academic mobility programmes.
