The protection of the intellectual property is one of the constituents of scientific and technical activity, which has been taken into consideration from the very beginning of Sumy State University's scientific work. The university (at that time Sumy branch of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute) received the first protective document in 1971. 

The development of advanced information technologies raises a matter of copyright security for SumDU lecturers’ scientific works. SumDU audio-visual materials, computer programmes, e-textbooks, multimedia manuals, and lecture courses for the educational process, scientific digests, and single articles are registered at the Department of Intellectual Property and given copyright certificates.
