The initiative "Sumy State University is a Family Friendly Institution" started in 2011. It emerged for the purpose to help students and university staff to find the balance between family and work/educational duties. The general goal of the initiative is the creation of opportunities, which lead up to a fruitful and effective combination of such two spheres of life as profession and family one.
Management of the initiative is under the Department of psychology, politology, and social-cultural technologies and Gender resources Center of Sumy State University. The Department chief is Svitaylo Nina.
The structure of the Initiative comprises the Family Support Center (“Child space” premise), the Center chief and staff – educator and relevant professionals on directions described below.
- Child space arrangements in University (with service of look after the child while parents involved in the study/professional activities);
- Consultative services (psychological, juridical, breastfeeding support group);
- Awareness-raising on issues of work-life balance, family friendliness, support of working/study parents in their parental duties – filling the websites with these topics (http://leleka.sumdu.edu.ua/en/);
- Training for students and other concerns oriented on personal growth;
- Services for preparing children for school;
- Family events.

- European Union grants support (2012-2015);
- Widespread the experience of Sumy State University initiative "Family-friendly university" among educational and other concerned institutions of Ukraine - Letter of reference;
- Use of distant (online) forms of looking after children during the restrictions due to COVID-19.
All services within the initiative are free for students of all forms of study and for the university staff too.
