Sumy State University is located in Sumy city in the North-East of Ukraine. Its history began in 1948. Today, SumDU is a leading university in the region.

The University currently serves about 12,000 students who are pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees in 55 majors and 23 fields of knowledge. About 1900 foreign students represent more than 50 countries worldwide.

Sumy State University enters the ranking of the THE World University Rankings by Times Higher Education at the position of 501-600 and 1-2 position among Ukrainian universities.

Sumy State University enters the TOP-group (3%) of leading universities of the world and is classified as a university with high research intensity according to the international ranking of higher education institutions QS World University Rankings. According to these rankings, SumDU enters the group of leading Ukrainian universities. SumDU also ranked 101-150 among the fastest-rising young stars of the higher education world by the QS.

Sumy State University enters the young universities ranking from Times Higher Education and currently, SumDU is the only representative of Ukraine in this category of ranking.

According to the University Impact Rankings by Times Higher Education, Sumy State University is in TOP-600-800 universities worldwide by societal and economic impact, THE branch ranking marks Sumy State University in the position of 401-500 in the branch of “Business and Economics” (2nd place among Ukrainian HEIs), 501-600 in the “Engineering” branch (1st-2nd place among Ukrainian HEIs) and 1001+ in “Physical Sciences”. 

According to the worldwide Internet rankings, Webometrics SumDU takes 3rd place among Ukrainian universities. It also takes high positions in the European ranking U-Multirank that identifies most of the indicators of academic, extracurricular, international, and other activity of SumDU as being higher than the world average value. 

Sumy State University is the first Ukrainian higher education institution, which passed an independent external audit of the QS Company in 2014 and was given the highest points (5 stars) in such categories as Teaching, Engagement, Access, and E-learning.

According to the international SCImago Institutions Rankings, Sumy State University enters the TOP-250 universities of Central and Eastern Europe.

According to international ecological ranking UI GreenMetric, Sumy State University enters TOP-450 the world’s universities. SumDU is the 1st Ukrainian university to enter this ecological ranking.

SumDU takes a leading position by the number of scientific and pedagogical employees that have 5 and more publications in editions indexed by Scopus and/or Web of Science Core Collection databases. 

Sumy State University is the 4th among Ukrainian HEIs according to the results of the evaluation of the quality of universities’ scientific activity based on the citation of scientists on Google Scholar by Webometrics.

SumDU holds high positions in the consolidated ranking of Ukrainian universities “Osvita.ua” and enters the TOP-3 Ukrainian universities according to “TOP-200 Ukraine 2020”.

The University holds the highest position among Ukrainian higher education institutions for the number of prize-winning places in All-Ukrainian competitions of students’ research works and is among leaders in All-Ukrainian Olympiads in educational disciplines, training areas, and majors.

International Activity

The University is a signatory of Magna Charta Universitatum and Talloires Declaration, a reliable member of the International Association of Universities, European University Association, Association of Economic Universities of South and Eastern Europe and the Black Sea Region, IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence, IIENetwork and other international organizations.

Sumy State University cooperates with more than 300 partners from 55 world countries, including the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Japan, South Korea, China and other countries of the world.

SumDU is a reliable partner for joint projects in frames of international grant programmes of EU (Erasmus+, Horizon 2020), United Nation Development Programme, NATO, DAAD, American Councils, British Council, the World Bank, bilateral scientific and research projects, grants of private foundations. The University accomplishes more than 300 grants annually. For the last 5 years, the amount of research work in frames of international grant projects has increased 20 times.

The University actively develops academic mobility programmes, including long-term and short-term studies, internships, and placement programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students; professional development, teaching, and research mobility for staff with substantial scholarship and grant support using technologies of credit transfer and recognition of academic results.

Research Activity

According to the SCOPUS database, Sumy State University holds a leading position among Ukrainian higher education and research institutions for h-index (the index of research impact) and the number of citations by the international academic community.

There are more than 3000 employees in the university, including Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, 150 Doctors of Sciences, Professors, and 700 Candidates of Sciences (Ph.D.), Associate Professors represent the academic staff of the University. There are 24 majors in postgraduate and 16 majors in post-doctoral programmes, degree awarding academic councils.

According to the number of commercial contracts and grants, and the efficiency of the use of budget funds, Sumy State University is one of the leaders among Ukrainian universities.

Library

An advanced library information system contains over 3 million items both in hard copies and e-copies and provides access to the most famous electronic databases of the world. The University’s library is a winner of the national competition “Library of the Year” in the nomination "University Libraries" 2019. SumDU repository is the 1st among Ukrainian HEIs and enters TOP-40 of the biggest world institutional repositories according to the Ranking Web of Repositories by Webometrics.

Web of Science Core Collection database indexes the University’s two scientific journals such as “Marketing and Management of Innovations” and  “Nanomaterials: Applications and Properties”. The last one and “Journal of Nano- and Electronic Physics” are also indexed by the SCOPUS database.

Computer Labs and Information Technology

There are TOEFL-center, resource and educational centers of Microsoft, Cisco, PortaOne, Delcam, NETCRACKER, Siemens, SAS, MindK, Apptimized Operations, Brocoders, and other companies operating at the SumDU campus.

Extracurricular activities

40 kinds of sports and about 100 sports groups are available at the University. Sports teams perform at the premier league level. About 100 students are the record breakers and prize winners of the Olympic Games, World, European and Ukrainian Championships.

Three SumDU undergraduates and masters were invited to join the Ukrainian national team for the XXX Summer Olympic Games in London, and six SumDU undergraduates and masters participated in the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. They were awarded gold medals in the relay biathlon race and bronze medals in boxing and biathlon sprint.

More than 100 students won over 200 awards at the World and Europe Championships and Cups, World Universiades, and Olympic Games. At the European university games in 2018, SumDU got 1st place among Ukrainian HEIs according to the number of medals won.  

According to the results of the 1st All-Ukrainian Winter Universiade 2019, SumDU got the champion's title. At the All-Ukrainian Summer Universiades SumDU is a leader in the corresponding HEI category and takes 4th place among all the Ukrainian HEIs.

SumDU has the biggest sport base among educational institutions of Ukraine: Palace of students' sports - Olympic training base for athletes of Ukraine, indoor beach volleyball complex, 2 stadiums, 3 swimming pools, 6 game halls, 5 gyms, 7 playing fields, 2 shooting ranges, water-rowing, and ski bases, out-of-town sport and recreation center "Univer".
