On June 20th 2017 the opening of biomedical engineering (BME) research laboratory was held at SSU within the framework of the grant project “Biomedical Engineering Education Tempus Initiative in Eastern Neighboring Area” (BME-ENA) of EU Tempus Programme. The laboratory will facilitate the training of Master students majored in BME.

SSU and National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” as Ukrainian project’s participants have developed the joint curriculum for Master’s programme in Biomedical Engineering taking into account recommendations of the universities of European Union.

The internal mobility of students and postgraduates was initiated between National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and Sumy State University.

SSU Vice-rector for scientific and pedagogic work, international affairs and technical support Volodymyr Lyubchak and Head of the Department of Nanoelectronics Oleksandr Pohrebniak cut the ribbon at the opening. “I congratulate everyone on the successful completion of the project which resulted in BME research laboratory that we are opening today. It will become another platform and opportunity for education of the highest level available at our University”, says SSU Vice-rector.

Associate Professor of the Department of Nanoelectronics Oleksandr Kryvets shared details about the laboratory and principles of its work with scientists, students, and employers. He noted that Master students will have lectures as well as practical trainings at the laboratory.

“The new major launched at our University combines IT-technologies and knowledge in the field of modern medicine and nanotechnologies. I would like to note that such specialists are highly demanded in the modern world”, suggests Dean of the Faculty of Electronics and Informational Technologies Serhiy Protsenko. “This year admission of students to this Master programme will begin.”

Head of the Department of Nanoelectronics Oleksandr Pohrebniak talked about the project itself which was organized within the framework of Tempus Programme. The aim of the project is promotion of biomedical engineering education in the countries of Eastern Partnership through the development / modernization of study programmes in accordance with European standards and achievements in this field. “We are at the beginning of the path,” claims Oleksandr Pohrebniak. “We have a lot of work ahead of us to raise the ranking of the major introduced. We must become strong and competitive in BME field.”

Project’s coordinator from Ukraine, Deputy Head of Microelectronics Department of the Faculty of Electronics at National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, Associate Professor Anatolii Orlov congratulated everyone on the completion of the three-year project via Skype. The participants of laboratory’s opening received written congratulations from European project’s coordinator – Professor of the University of Patras (Greece) Nicolas Pallikarakis.

During the event Deputy Director of the Regional Emergency Aid Center Oksana Serhieieva and Director of “MedTechService” Ihor Zakharov expressed their congratulations and gratitude for the cooperation. They are strongly convinced that successful future of Ukraine and the whole world is in the hands of BME specialists. “This is a very important step for Sumy State University and we, as employers, are looking forward to future graduates in this major.”

Let us remind you that biomedical engineering (BME) is a branch of science and technology that combines engineering, technical, medical and biological knowledge, means and methods for creation, improvement and research of natural and artificial biological objects, equipment, materials and products of medical purpose, technologies and technical systems of diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of human diseases as well as software and information technologies for solving applied and fundamental problems of biology and medicine.
